Delivering a safer future for Southeastern Utah听

For residents in the Montezuma Creek, Aneth, Bluff and surrounding Navajo Nation communities connected by SR-162 and SR-262 in southeastern Utah, a highway is their lifeline to school, work, healthcare, community services, local commerce and neighboring states.听

And as of this month, that lifeline has been strengthened and made more reliable thanks to the partnerships Neilson Construction & Materials (Neilson) had with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Sunrise Engineering and the Navajo Nation with the completion of the Energy Corridor, the largest project Neilson has completed to date.听

This project transformed 53 miles of critical transportation infrastructure across San Juan County and was completed four months ahead of schedule.听

Transforming a Critical Corridor听

For two years, the Energy Corridor has been reconstructed and enhanced in key areas, widening roadways, improving shoulders, upgrading drainage infrastructure, constructing a new bridge over McElmo Creek and building a roundabout in Montezuma Creek. These features were designed to increase safety, improve mobility and support the long-term needs of the communities that drive along this highway every day.听

Community members rely on the Energy Corridor, and this section of roadway also serves visitors traveling between Utah鈥檚 iconic destinations, including Bears Ears, Hovenweep and the Four Corners Monuments.听

As one of the largest infrastructure investments the State of Utah has made in the region, the Energy Corridor represents a lasting investment in southeastern Utah’s future.听

Building in Utah鈥檚 Remote Areas听

This project’s success is well-earned, as it presented unique challenges to complete.听

Stretching across remote terrain within the Navajo Nation, the Energy Corridor required close coordination among contractors, engineers, tribal officials, community stakeholders, schools, emergency responders and UDOT representatives. Throughout construction, Neilson crews worked to maintain easy access for residents while minimizing disruptions along the area鈥檚 primary transportation routes.听

As if managing such a diverse group of community members wasn鈥檛 difficult enough, the rural location also made communication among team members harder.听

With limited cellular service across most of the corridor, Nielson crews adopted innovative solutions to stay connected by mounting Starlink technology on paving equipment, in plant facilities and inside management vehicles. The technology helped teams coordinate work, maintain productivity and respond quickly to changing conditions throughout construction.听

Legacy Beyond Construction

While the project has delivered significant infrastructure improvements, Neilson considers the positive community impact its greatest achievement when everything is said and done.听

Today, wider shoulders, improved sight lines, upgraded intersections, enhanced drainage systems, new guardrails and safer roadway geometry are helping create a better travel experience for residents, visitors and commercial traffic for generations to come.听

For Nielson, completing the Energy Corridor reflects what can be accomplished through innovation, partnership and a shared commitment to serving communities.听

As the largest project in company history, it stands as a milestone achievement and a testament to the people who made it possible.
